The Feeder and The Feeding
Speculative design proposal for the At The Above Gallery space.
- Outside the body, out of arms reach, food is paid little attention. Access to specific foods must be maintained to uphold pleasure. So important is this pleasure, we utilize our greatest machines and abundance of finite resource to uphold it.
- Human evolution. We are predicted to evolve further. Through our craft, and mechanical science, or closer to the body, within, slowly adapting to the changes of our surrounding environment.
- Given the trajectory of current food relations, how might our consumption methods adapt to the ‘needs’ of future generations? In attaining efficiency, what might people be willing to sacrifice?
Excerpt from The New Futurist Manifesto
‘We declare that the splendor of the world has been enriched by a new beauty: the beauty of speed.’ The futurist obsession with speed had to be reinjected into the placid world bounded by tradition and inefficient practice that existed not long ago. While the futurists valued speed for its fleeting beauty, we adopt its importance through time. Oh time, once truly misunderstood as a seeming impossibility to grasp, our hands have never so surely held you. We are not mistaken, we cannot contain time, yet we displace it as you would temporarily imbalance another if you shove them. Speed is the glue between our hands and time, our control over morality. The speed and efficiency of the new world are our chains removed to move, labour, and create. Why would we subject ourselves to the terrible slowness of eating and its repercussions, when services are capable of this process for the miniscule cost of capital and discomfort?’
